It all started back in 2003 (by accident),it was during my sons pre-school christmas party, the children waited with baited breath for santa to walk through the door, but he wasn't due for another hour,so in the mean time a magician was booked to entertain, but all was not well...he failed to turn up....nothing was going right........suddenly a voice called from the back of the room...it was my wifes voice.....''quick !''she said''go and get your magic stuff''.
Sheer panic had set in because i had never performed in front of an audience...i didnt have a set list,no scripts and some of the tricks i hadn't practiced for ages.
When i returned 10 minutes later, there was a small table set up for me at the end of the room and immediately one of the teachers told the children to sit on the floor ''come on children''she said pointing to where she wanted the children ''give the magic man a round of applause''
I hadn't even took my jacket off and the teacher had pearched herself on a chair to watch the show.
Now the panic had really got to me....a cold winters morning and i was dripping with sweat...i was shaking nervously....i didn't know where to start or what to say.
I turned to the children and in a very kind of strangulated voice i said '' hello goys and birls''
This was going to go down like a led balloon....the first trick went wrong...and the second ''what a laughing stock i was going to be...but then things started getting better because the kids started laughing and clapping....i could feel a tommy cooper act coming on.....
At the end of my 30 minute show, which seemed like 3 hours i seemed to be appologising to the adults for my terrible act they had just witnessed...they replied ''it was a great show''...were they just being kind ?.
When i got home i asked my wife what she thought of the show '' write some scripts...a trick list and a colourful waist coat and then you wont feel so bad and youll know what to say and in what order''
I took her advise and 2 weeks later i had another booking....which went a little better....and i knew that if i dedicated more time to the art of magic and practice then the better i would become.
After another few shows i decided to find out about c.r.b checks and insurances....order more tricks.....my bank balance was almost emptied from my new venture but this is what i wanted out of life....to be an entertainer.
My shows have changed dramatically over the years because i work hard to put together a professional show...a show that will get me noticed as a top entertainer.
Here i am still working towards a high profile magician in peterborough...but they do say it takes years to get established.....watch this space.
